Storms Expected Tonight and Friday; Moderate Swim Risk Issued for Lake Michigan Beaches

Marquette, MI – August 15, 2024The National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for central and western Upper Michigan, warning of thunderstorms tonight and extending through Friday night. Additionally, a moderate swim risk has been issued for Lake Michigan beaches in southern Schoolcraft County, raising concerns about dangerous rip currents.

Thunderstorms Expected Tonight and Into Friday

Residents in Upper Michigan should prepare for potential thunderstorms beginning tonight and continuing into Friday. While these storms are not forecast to reach severe levels, they could bring lightning, gusty winds, and localized heavy rain, which may create hazardous conditions, especially for those outdoors.

Areas such as Marquette, Alger, and Menominee counties are most likely to experience storm activity as the system moves across the region. The NWS advises residents to remain weather-aware and take precautions during any outdoor activities, particularly during the evening hours when storms are more likely to develop.

Moderate Rip Current Risk for Lake Michigan Beaches

In addition to the storm threat, a moderate swim risk has been issued for Lake Michigan beaches in southern Schoolcraft County on Friday due to dangerous rip currents. The NWS warns that only experienced swimmers should enter the water, and even then, they should do so with caution. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, creating life-threatening conditions.

Beachgoers are advised to stay informed of local conditions and avoid swimming if unsure of their abilities or the safety of the water.

    Outlook for the Weekend

While thunderstorms are expected to taper off by Saturday, residents should continue to monitor local forecasts as weather conditions evolve. The NWS is not anticipating the need for weather spotter activation at this time but will update warnings if conditions worsen.

    Safety and Preparedness

As thunderstorms and rip current risks develop, residents and visitors in Upper Michigan are encouraged to stay informed, exercise caution, and prioritize safety, whether at the beach or during outdoor activities. Being aware of rip current dangers and storm forecasts can help prevent dangerous situations and keep communities safe.
