Gusty Winds, Small Hail, and Locally Heavy Rain Expected Friday Afternoon and Evening

Jackson, KY – August 15, 2024The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson has issued an updated Hazardous Weather Outlook for eastern Kentucky, warning of thunderstorms late tonight and extending through Monday. The greatest risk will come on Friday afternoon and evening, with the potential for stronger storms bringing gusty winds, small hail, and locally heavy rainfall.

    Thunderstorms Expected Late Tonight

Eastern Kentucky could see thunderstorms develop overnight, although these storms are not expected to be severe. Residents in areas such as Fleming, Montgomery, and Laurel counties should be aware of changing weather conditions and be prepared for periods of rain and lightning.

High Probability of Strong Storms Friday

The highest probability of thunderstorms will occur on Friday afternoon and evening, when stronger storms are expected to develop. The main threats from these storms include gusty winds, small hail, and locally heavy rain, which could lead to isolated flooding in low-lying areas.

Counties such as Pulaski, Wayne, Harlan, and Pike are among those that could be affected by these strong storms. The NWS advises residents to be cautious during outdoor activities, as storms could move in quickly and bring hazardous conditions.

    Storms to Continue Through Monday

Thunderstorm chances will persist into the weekend, with afternoon and evening storms expected through Monday. Although the primary risks will subside after Friday, residents should remain alert to the possibility of locally heavy rainfall and strong winds throughout the forecast period.

    Spotter Activation Not Anticipated

While spotter activation is not expected at this time, the NWS will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as the weather develops. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take precautions during periods of severe weather.

Safety First: Prepare for Stormy Weather

With gusty winds, hail, and heavy rainfall possible, it's important for residents in eastern Kentucky to stay weather-aware, particularly on Friday. Keep an eye on local forecasts, and be ready to take shelter if storms intensify.
