Storms with Gusty Winds and Heavy Rainfall Likely Tonight and Into Friday

Louisville, KY – August 15, 2024The National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for southern Indiana and central Kentucky, warning of strong storms tonight and extending into Friday. Residents should prepare for gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall, potential hail, with some storms potentially becoming severe.

    Strong Storms Expected Tonight

The NWS warns that stronger storms could develop across the region tonight, bringing the potential for locally heavy rain and gusty winds. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, these storms could create hazardous conditions, particularly for those traveling or engaged in outdoor activities.

Areas such as Jefferson IN, Floyd IN, Jefferson KY, Oldham, and Bourbon counties may experience the most significant impacts from these storms, which will move eastward at 20 to 25 mph. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather conditions closely, as thunderstorms can evolve rapidly.

    More Storms Possible Friday

Isolated strong storms are expected to persist into Friday, with similar threats of gusty winds and heavy rainfall. Although the storms are likely to be scattered, they may still bring periods of intense rain and wind, leading to temporary flooding in low-lying areas and potential downed trees.

The NWS emphasizes that while spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, conditions could change, and updates will be provided if needed.

    Prepare for Stormy Weather

As storms develop, it's crucial for residents in southern Indiana and central Kentucky to stay informed and take precautions. The combination of strong winds, heavy rain, and the potential for severe weather could lead to localized flooding, power outages, and road hazards.

The NWS advises people to be prepared for changing conditions and to use caution during storm activity, especially as thunderstorms can become erratic and unpredictable.
