Gusty Winds and Localized Flooding Expected from Tonight into Friday

Louisville, KY – August 15, 2024Residents of southern Indiana should prepare for strong thunderstorms and heavy rainfall tonight and continuing into Friday, according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville. These storms could bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain, potentially leading to flooding in some areas.

    Thunderstorms Expected Tonight

Southern Indiana, including counties such as Orange, Washington, Scott, and Clark, will see a chance of strong thunderstorms tonight. While the storms are not expected to become widespread severe weather events, they will bring gusty winds and periods of heavy rain that may lead to flooding in low-lying areas and create hazardous driving conditions.

The storms are expected to move eastward at 20 to 25 mph, potentially affecting communities from Jeffersonville to Madison. Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and remain cautious of changing conditions.

    More Storms Possible Friday

Friday will bring another round of isolated strong storms across southern Indiana, particularly during the afternoon and evening. These storms are likely to produce heavy downpours and gusty winds, raising the possibility of flash flooding and localized storm damage, including downed trees and power outages.

Communities in Dubois, Harrison, and Floyd counties should be especially vigilant, as these storms could intensify quickly and bring hazardous conditions.

    Spotter Activation May Be Needed

While spotter activation is not expected tonight, the NWS suggests that it may be necessary if conditions worsen. Residents should be prepared for rapid changes in weather and stay informed about potential severe weather alerts.

    Stay Weather-Aware

With gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and unpredictable storm patterns, southern Indiana residents are urged to stay weather-aware tonight and through Friday. Flooded roads, fallen branches, and power disruptions are possible in the areas hardest hit by the storms.
