Rough Surf, Rip Currents, and Stormy Seas Expected as Hurricane Ernesto Sends Swells to Florida Coast

Melbourne, FL – August 15, 2024East Central Florida is expected to experience hazardous weather conditions tonight and into the weekend due to swells from distant Hurricane Ernesto, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Melbourne. The primary threats include strong rip currents, rough surf, and hazardous boating conditions, with isolated thunderstorms expected tonight.

    Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Tonight

Scattered showers and isolated lightning storms are possible tonight across the region, primarily from Cape Canaveral through the Treasure Coast. The storms could bring occasional lightning, gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph, and torrential downpours, with some areas potentially receiving 1 to 2 inches of rain, particularly along the Treasure Coast.

The NWS advises residents and travelers in these areas to be cautious of sudden weather changes and stay informed of local conditions.

Moderate Rip Current Risk and Rough Surf Overnight

There remains a moderate risk of dangerous rip currents along the coast tonight, with the threat increasing overnight due to incoming swells from Hurricane Ernesto. The NWS strongly discourages entering the ocean at night, as the risks from rip currents and rough surf are elevated.

These conditions are expected to worsen overnight, making swimming and water activities highly dangerous.

    Hazardous Boating Conditions

Boating conditions are set to deteriorate through tonight and into Friday, with seas building to 4 to 6 feet in nearshore waters by daybreak. A Small Craft Advisory has been issued for the offshore waters where seas are expected to build to 6 to 8 feet, particularly north of Sebastian Inlet. Small craft operators are urged to exercise caution due to the hazardous seas.

By Friday, the long-period swells from Hurricane Ernesto will continue to pose significant risks to boaters and beachgoers, with hazardous conditions near inlets, especially during outgoing tides.

Rip Current Risks and Rough Surf Continue Through the Weekend

The threat of strong rip currents and rough surf will persist through Friday and into the weekend, with a high risk of life-threatening rip currents expected at area beaches. Beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, as entering hazardous surf can be extremely dangerous.

Drier Air to Reduce Storm Chances by the Weekend

A drier airmass is expected to move into the region on Friday, bringing some relief from the heat and reducing the chance of storms through Sunday. While the air will be drier, the risks from rough seas and rip currents will remain, particularly along the coast.
