Heat Index to Soar Above 113°F; Residents Warned to Stay Indoors

Excessive Heat Warning Extended Through Sunday

Shreveport — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:49 AM CDT on August 17, 2024. - A prolonged and dangerous heat wave is expected to continue across much of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas through Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the region, predicting dangerously high heat index values reaching up to 113°F. The warning remains in effect from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM CDT on Sunday, with conditions likely to pose serious health risks to anyone exposed to the heat for prolonged periods.

The advisory impacts south-central and southwest Arkansas, north-central and northwest Louisiana, southeast Oklahoma, and much of eastern and northeastern Texas.

Dangerous Conditions Expected Throughout the Weekend

Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses, which are expected to rise significantly in these extreme conditions. Officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity will lead to heat index values soaring above 105°F in many areas, with Sunday being particularly severe.

Thunderstorms Bring Some Risk But Limited Relief

While a few strong thunderstorms are expected Saturday night into early Sunday across parts of central and southern Arkansas, the primary concern remains the oppressive heat. Any storm activity could bring damaging winds but is unlikely to provide significant cooling relief for the region. The heat will persist well into the next week, adding pressure to local communities already grappling with power outages and increased health risks.

    Heat Safety Tips From Officials

In light of the continued heat wave, the National Weather Service advises residents to avoid outdoor activities, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Those who must be outside are encouraged to wear light clothing, drink plenty of fluids, and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces.

Authorities also remind residents not to leave children or pets in vehicles, as car interiors can reach fatal temperatures within minutes. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends that outdoor workers schedule frequent rest breaks and seek shade as much as possible. In cases of heat stroke or exhaustion, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention.
