Coastal Flood Advisory Remains in Effect Through Monday Morning

Mount Holly — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:34 PM EDT on August 17, 2024. - The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for areas in southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania, which will remain in effect from 10:00 PM Saturday until 5:00 AM EDT on Monday. Minor flooding, with up to one foot of water above ground level, is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Residents in affected areas, including Gloucester, Camden, and Northwestern Burlington counties in New Jersey and Delaware and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, should prepare for potential road closures and hazardous travel conditions, particularly during high tide cycles. Flooding impacts are anticipated to vary with the tides, causing disruption to vulnerable coastal roads.

Flood Watch Issued for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding

In addition to the coastal flooding, a Flood Watch has been issued from 2:00 AM Sunday through late Sunday night for northern Delaware, southern New Jersey, and southeastern Pennsylvania. The region is expected to see 1 to 3 inches of rain, with localized areas potentially receiving more than 4 inches.

The heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, driven by an approaching cold front, could lead to flooding in rivers, creeks, and poor drainage areas. Urban locations with inadequate drainage systems are particularly vulnerable, and residents are advised to prepare for possible flash flooding.

Potential Flooding Along the Delaware River

Specific areas along the Delaware River are being monitored closely for minor flooding during high tide cycles. At Philadelphia and Burlington, tidal forecasts predict minor flooding, with water levels exceeding flood thresholds during late-night and early morning high tides.
