Beach Hazard Warning in Effect for Michigan’s Eastern Coast

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:06 AM EDT on August 19, 2024.- Residents and visitors in Michigan’s Thumb region should exercise caution today, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Beach Hazards Statement in effect from 10 AM EDT this morning through this evening. The areas most affected include Huron, Sanilac, and St. Clair counties, which encompass the coastal zones of Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron.

    Dangerous Swim Conditions Expected

Hazardous swim conditions are forecasted for today, with strong currents potentially pulling swimmers into deeper water. The NWS strongly advises avoiding the water altogether during this time to minimize the risk of being caught in these dangerous conditions. High wave action, combined with a moderate onshore flow, will contribute to the heightened dangers along the beaches in the affected areas.

    Outlook for the Week

The Beach Hazards Statement is expected to expire this evening. No further hazardous weather conditions are anticipated for the remainder of the week, from Tuesday through Sunday, according to the NWS.

    Precautionary Measures Urged

The NWS stresses the importance of staying out of the water while the Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect. Rip currents and dangerous waves pose a serious threat to swimmers during these conditions. Residents and beachgoers are encouraged to monitor local updates and heed all warnings to ensure their safety.

"Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions," the NWS statement warns.
