Beach Hazards Remain in Effect for Western Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:22 AM EDT on August 19, 2024. - The National Weather Service (NWS) continues to warn of hazardous beach conditions along Michigan’s western shore, with a Beach Hazards Statement in effect through late tonight. The affected areas include Mason, Oceana, and Muskegon counties, encompassing popular beach spots such as Stearns Park in Ludington, Mears State Park in Pentwater, and Muskegon State Park.

High Waves and Strong Currents Pose Significant Risks

Swimmers and beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, as high wave action and strong currents are expected to create dangerous swimming conditions. Piers in the area may also become heavily swamped by waves, increasing the risk of accidents. The north sides of piers will be especially vulnerable to strong currents, adding to the hazardous conditions.

"Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water, and high waves can sweep people off piers," warns the NWS in its latest advisory.

    Expected Duration of Beach Hazards

These hazardous conditions are expected to persist through late tonight, with waves and currents continuing to pose a threat until conditions calm overnight. Residents and visitors should be vigilant, following local authorities’ guidance on beach access and closures.

    Precautions and Safety Advice

The NWS advises avoiding the water and staying off piers throughout the duration of the Beach Hazards Statement. Swimming in these conditions can be life-threatening, and pier safety is a growing concern as waves intensify. Beachgoers are encouraged to check for local beach closures and updates from authorities.
