High Swim Risk Continues for Lake Michigan Beaches

CHICAGO — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:08 AM CDT on August 19, 2024. - A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for Lake Michigan beaches in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, with dangerous wave action and strong currents expected to persist through Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned beachgoers in Lake, Cook, and Porter counties to avoid the water due to life-threatening swimming conditions.

Large Waves and Strong Currents Create Dangerous Conditions

According to the NWS, waves are expected to reach heights of 5 to 8 feet along southern Lake Michigan’s beaches. These conditions pose significant risks, especially for inexperienced swimmers. The NWS advises that swimming in these conditions could be life-threatening, urging beachgoers to remain out of the water to avoid being caught in dangerous currents.

"The highest waves are expected at northwest Indiana Lake Michigan beaches," the NWS stated, adding that piers, jetties, and other shoreline structures should be avoided as they are especially vulnerable to swamping by large waves.

    Outlook Through Tuesday Evening

The Beach Hazards Statement will remain in effect until Tuesday evening, with conditions expected to stay hazardous until then. Waves and currents will continue to create perilous situations for anyone entering the water at affected beaches, with advisories and swim bans in place for Chicago beaches. Information on swim advisories or bans can be found at www.cpdbeaches.com.

    Safety Recommendations from the NWS

The NWS stresses that the best precaution is to stay out of the water until conditions improve. Beachgoers should also avoid piers and other shoreline structures where the risk of being swept away by waves is heightened.
