Excessive Heat Warning: Texas Faces Sweltering Temperatures Today

The National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, Texas, has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for parts of south-central Texas, including major cities like San Antonio, Austin, and New Braunfels. Temperatures are expected to soar to dangerous levels, reaching between 105°F and 110°F today, with heat index values potentially climbing as high as 114°F.

This extreme heat will persist until at least 9 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. The impacted areas stretch from the Coastal Plains to the I-35 corridor, encompassing the Hill Country and cities such as Llano, Hays, Blanco, and Bexar counties.

Stay Cool and Hydrated: Heat Illnesses Pose Major Risks

With temperatures expected to reach critical levels, residents are urged to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and remaining in air-conditioned environments whenever possible.

Those particularly vulnerable to the intense heat, including the elderly, children, and pets, are encouraged to stay indoors. Never leave children or animals unattended in vehicles, as the internal temperature of cars can quickly reach lethal levels.

Heat Relief Expected by the Weekend, But Temperatures Remain Above Normal

The blistering conditions will ease slightly on Thursday, but the Heat Advisory will likely remain in effect, as the region will still experience temperatures above average. By Friday, a cooling trend is forecast, though temperatures will remain higher than normal through the weekend.

    No Spotter Activation Required

At this time, weather spotter activation is not anticipated, but the public is encouraged to report any major weather anomalies or extreme heat conditions to the National Weather Service.
