High pressure brings clear skies and chilly nights to Northern Michigan, with summer warmth expected to return by the weekend.

Gaylord, MI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:31 AM EDT on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

Clear Skies and Cool Nights to Dominate Northern Michigan

The National Weather Service in Gaylord, Michigan, forecasts continued cool and dry weather across Northern Michigan for the remainder of the workweek. A large high-pressure system, stretching from James Bay to the Mid Mississippi Valley, will maintain clear skies and unseasonably cool temperatures through Thursday night.

Temperatures are expected to stay below average, with highs in the low to mid-70s during the day and overnight lows dropping into the 40s across much of the region. Some areas, particularly inland from the lakes, may experience temperatures as low as the lower 40s.

Warming Trend Expected by the Weekend

While the cool weather persists through the workweek, a gradual warming trend is anticipated to begin by Friday. By the weekend, summer-like conditions are forecast to return, with warmer and more humid air arriving as winds shift to a southwesterly flow.

The high-pressure system is expected to hold off any significant precipitation, but there is a small chance of isolated showers in the Eastern Upper Peninsula on Friday, as a weak shortwave passes through. However, dry conditions will likely continue, with only sprinkles expected if any precipitation occurs.

Return of Summer Heat and Humidity

As the upper-level ridging shifts eastward over the weekend, warm air from the Plains and Gulf Coast will push into the Great Lakes region. This could bring higher temperatures and increased humidity by Sunday into next week. Highs could climb back into the 80s, just in time for many to return to school.
