Showers and thunderstorms will make brief appearances in Northern Minnesota before a warming trend brings temperatures into the 80s by the weekend.

Duluth, MN — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:28 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

Isolated Showers Today, Warmer Weather Ahead for Northern Minnesota

The National Weather Service in Duluth, Minnesota, forecasts isolated showers and general thunderstorms today for the Arrowhead region of Minnesota. These rain chances will continue into Thursday and Friday, followed by a warming trend that will push temperatures into the 80s by the weekend.

Today, a weak vorticity maximum will bring a 10-20% chance of light rain to areas near the International Border, particularly the Arrowhead. The rest of Northern Minnesota will remain dry with seasonal temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.

    Thunderstorm Chances Thursday and Friday

A more significant weather event is expected Thursday as a warm front moves across north-central Minnesota, bringing a 40-60% chance of showers and thunderstorms. While these storms are not expected to be severe, some rumbling thunder and brief heavy rainfall are possible, especially in north-central Minnesota. Storms will continue overnight into Friday, though precipitation is expected to be light, with rainfall totals generally under a tenth of an inch.

Warm Temperatures Return for the Weekend

By Saturday, a high-pressure ridge will shift eastward, ushering in a warming trend that will bring above-normal temperatures to the region. Highs in the mid-80s are expected across Northern Minnesota by Sunday, and these warmer conditions will persist into early next week. While the weather will stay primarily dry, there are slight chances for rain and thunderstorms early next week as disturbances move across the ridge.
