As the new school year kicks off, parents and guardians across Michigan have a powerful new tool at their disposal to ensure their children’s school bus is safe. The Michigan State Police (MSP) is reminding families that they can now easily check the safety history of their child’s school bus by simply scanning a QR code displayed on the bus.

    Ensuring Safety Through Easy Access

Thanks to Michigan's School Bus Inspection Program, parents and guardians can access detailed safety records for all school buses used to transport students to and from school and school-related activities. The QR code, located on the bus service door where students enter, provides immediate access to the inspection results of the vehicle.

“Anyone with a smartphone can scan a QR code displayed on the bus service door where students enter the bus,” said Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP. “Every parent or guardian has instant access to the condition of the vehicle transporting your student.”

This simple and effective measure enhances transparency and accountability in school transportation, giving parents peace of mind about the safety of the vehicles their children ride every day.

    Michigan’s School Bus Inspection Program

The School Bus Inspection Program is a comprehensive effort by the MSP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. Under Michigan law, all public, private, charter, and denominational school vehicles used for transporting students must be inspected annually. This includes public-school academy vehicles, ensuring that all buses across the state are held to the same rigorous safety standards.

Following each inspection, a bright green sticker featuring the MSP shield and the school calendar year is placed on the bus’s front windshield, confirming the bus has passed its annual safety check. The QR code, located near the entrance of the bus, links to the full inspection history, allowing parents and guardians to quickly verify the vehicle's status.

Vast Reach of Michigan’s School Bus System

With over 17,000 vehicles transporting more than 800,000 school children across Michigan, covering more than 10 million miles annually, maintaining the safety of school buses is a critical priority. By giving parents direct access to the safety records of these vehicles, the MSP is ensuring that families are well-informed and empowered to check the safety standards of the buses their children rely on.

How It Works: Simple and Effective

To use the QR code system, parents and guardians simply:

    • Locate the QR code on the bus service door.
    • Scan the code using a smartphone camera or QR code reader app.
    • View the inspection results, which will detail the condition of the bus and confirm whether it passed or failed its latest safety check.

This system makes it easier than ever for parents to stay informed and ensure that their children are being transported safely.

    Commitment to Safety

The MSP’s School Bus Inspection Program demonstrates the state’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that every child travels in a safe and reliable vehicle. As Michigan’s students embark on a new academic year, parents can feel confident in the safety of their school buses, thanks to these rigorous inspection protocols and the new, easy-to-use QR code system.
