Thunderstorms and Fog Set to Disrupt Weather Across the Region

GRAND FORKS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:49 AM CDT on Thursday, August 22, 2024. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Forks has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for portions of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota, warning of a Level 1 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms today. Starting around midday and lasting into the afternoon, these storms could bring hail up to 1 inch in diameter and wind gusts reaching 60 mph.

Severe Thunderstorm Threat for North Dakota and Minnesota

Residents in affected areas, including West Polk, Clay, Grand Forks, and Pembina counties, are urged to stay alert as these storms could cause significant localized damage.

Increased Severe Storm Risk on Sunday

Looking ahead, the NWS has also identified a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms on Sunday. This indicates a heightened risk of stronger storms developing across the region. Residents should monitor weather forecasts over the weekend as conditions may change rapidly.

Dense Fog Advisory for Early Friday Morning

In addition to the storm threat, the NWS has issued a Dense Fog Advisory, effective until 10:00 AM CDT this morning. This advisory affects both northwest and west central Minnesota as well as northeast and southeast North Dakota, covering areas such as Grand Forks, Clay, and Cass counties.

The advisory warns of visibility reductions to as low as one-quarter to one-half mile, creating hazardous driving conditions. Motorists are advised to slow down, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

    Precautionary Actions and Spotter Activation

Drivers should take extra caution during the Dense Fog Advisory, adjusting their speed and driving practices to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, the NWS has indicated that spotter activation may be required today to assist in tracking the severe thunderstorms. Spotters are encouraged to report any hail or strong winds to help the NWS refine its forecasts and issue timely warnings.
