Lansing, MIGovernor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) are encouraging Michigan families to enroll their 4-year-olds in free, high-quality pre-K programs across the state. Following a historic investment in the state’s education system, nearly 59,000 children are expected to benefit from universal pre-K, offering Michigan children a crucial start in their educational journey while saving families thousands in childcare costs.

As of August 15, enrollment has been expanded to include all families, regardless of income, though priority is still given to those most in need.

    A Victory for Michigan Families

Governor Whitmer, proud of this accomplishment in the recent bipartisan budget agreement, emphasized the significant benefits for Michigan families: “Free pre-K is here for Michigan families, and there is still time to enroll in a program in your area,” said Whitmer. “This is a huge win that gives kids the educational foundation they need and saves parents thousands on child care costs.”

Whitmer’s administration worked diligently to secure funding to make universal pre-K a reality. Her office views this as a critical step in improving the educational outcomes for children statewide, leveling the playing field for all regardless of their economic situation.

    Pre-K for All: A Game-Changer for Michigan's Future

Under the new Pre-K for All initiative, every 4-year-old in Michigan now has access to a free, high-quality pre-K program. This expansion marks a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to ensuring that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have the opportunity to thrive from an early age.

Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, director of MiLEAP, reinforced this message: “We are committed to ensuring Michigan families have access to a high-quality pre-K education that meets their needs and helps their child thrive.”

Pre-K programs focus on helping children reach key developmental milestones, preparing them for kindergarten by building essential skills like early math, reading, and writing. In addition, these programs emphasize social and developmental support from qualified teachers, ensuring children are prepared for the challenges of formal education.

    Economic Relief for Michigan Families

One of the most significant impacts of universal pre-K is the financial relief it offers to Michigan families. The state estimates that the program could save families as much as $10,000 per year in childcare costs, providing much-needed flexibility for parents to work, save, or invest in their family’s future.

For many families, these savings could have a transformative effect, easing financial pressures and allowing parents to focus on other priorities. By investing in early childhood education, the state also positions itself for long-term economic growth as parents are better able to re-enter the workforce, contribute to the economy, and raise a generation of better-prepared students.

How Families Can Enroll Their 4-Year-Olds

Enrollment in Michigan’s pre-K programs remains open, but families are encouraged to act quickly as availability varies by location. Children who turn 4 years old by December 1, 2024, are eligible to enroll in these programs for the fall semester.

Priority enrollment will continue to be given to families who need it most, but with the budget expansion, any family is welcome to apply. Interested families can find programs near them by visiting the state's dedicated website at MiPreKforAll.org.

Governor Whitmer and MiLEAP officials are urging all eligible families to take advantage of this once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure a brighter future for their children.

About MiLEAP: Preparing Michigan’s Workforce of Tomorrow

Established in 2023 by Governor Whitmer, MiLEAP focuses on improving educational outcomes across Michigan. The department’s mission is to ensure that every child, adult, and family in the state can succeed through lifelong learning opportunities. MiLEAP provides pathways to prosperity through early education, secondary education, and postsecondary opportunities, helping individuals and families "make it in Michigan" and access good-paying jobs.
