Dangerous Heat and Severe Storm Threats Loom Over Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin 8/24

    2024-08-24

Dense Fog and Thunderstorms Usher in the Weekend, Excessive Heat Watch in Effect for Monday

Duluth, MN — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:55 AM CDT on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Dense Fog Advisory in Effect for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin

This morning, areas of dense fog are impacting visibility across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, particularly along and north of Highway 2. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Dense Fog Advisory urging drivers to use caution and plan for extended travel times due to reduced visibility.

Thunderstorms to Hit Region Sunday and Monday

As the weekend progresses, weather conditions will grow increasingly unstable. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Sunday night into Monday morning, impacting north-central Minnesota and parts of northeast Minnesota. Some of these storms could become strong to severe.

The severe weather risk will continue on Monday afternoon and evening, with the Brainerd Lakes area, the Twin Ports, and parts of east-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin likely to experience strong to severe storms. Heavy rain, gusty winds, and hail are possible, making it essential for residents to stay weather-aware.

Excessive Heat Watch in Effect for Monday

While storms threaten parts of the region, an Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Pine, Burnett, and Washburn counties, including Tribal Lands in Burnett County and the Mille Lacs Band near Hinckley and Lena Lake. Dangerous heat index values of up to 105°F are forecast for Monday afternoon through Monday evening.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to:

    • Drink plenty of fluids
    • Stay in air-conditioned rooms
    • Avoid prolonged sun exposure
    • Check on vulnerable family members and neighbors

Heat-related illnesses are a significant risk during these extreme conditions. Additionally, leaving children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods, can be deadly as car interiors quickly reach lethal temperatures.

    Precautionary Measures and Advisory Updates

With a mix of dangerous heat and severe thunderstorms on the horizon, it’s crucial for residents of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin to remain vigilant and prepared. Travel and outdoor activities should be adjusted based on the latest weather reports, and emergency precautions should be in place for both heat and storm threats.

85 degrees is hardly a heat wave. And I don’t remember the last time we had so few hot days in the summer. I’m used to mid to upper 90s around this time of year, with buckling asphalt on the freeways. This is the lamest heat wave in the history of heat waves. Really, it’s a luke warm wave.

This forecast has nothing to do with my area. Why is it on my phone?
