Sweltering Temperatures and Isolated Thunderstorms to Impact Region Early Next Week

Milwaukee, WI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:17 AM CDT on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

    Isolated Thunderstorms Possible Tonight

Residents across east central, south central, and southeast Wisconsin should prepare for isolated thunderstorms late this evening into the overnight hours. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that these storms will primarily affect areas west of Interstate 90. While not expected to be severe, these storms could bring brief bouts of heavy rain and lightning.

Extreme Heat to Blanket Region on Monday and Tuesday

The more significant weather threat lies ahead, as a heat wave is forecast to hit much of southern Wisconsin. On Monday, heat index values are expected to soar between 95°F and 105°F, and these dangerously high temperatures could continue into Tuesday.

The NWS urges residents to take precautions during this heat event:

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
    • Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours
    • Seek air-conditioned environments
    • Check on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children

    Midweek Thunderstorm Threat

The heat wave will be followed by another round of thunderstorms starting in the middle of the week and continuing through Friday. While specific details are still developing, the NWS advises people to stay updated on potential severe weather as the system approaches.

Areas included in the forecast are:

    • Milwaukee
    • Sheboygan
    • Fond du Lac
    • Green Lake
    • Racine
    • Kenosha
    • Waukesha

Though no severe storms are expected at this time, conditions can change, and residents should be alert for updates.

Be Prepared for Both Heat and Storms

Given the forecast of extreme heat followed by storms, southern Wisconsin residents are advised to take a proactive approach to safety. Those with outdoor plans should stay weather-aware and adjust schedules to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
