Coastal Flooding and Rip Currents Threaten Charleston and Coastal Colleton 8/24

    2024-08-25

Flooded Roads and Dangerous Currents Expected Along South Carolina's Coast

Charleston, SC — Issued by the National Weather Service at 7:26 AM EDT on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Charleston and Colleton Counties

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for Charleston and Coastal Colleton counties until 2 PM EDT this afternoon. The advisory warns of potential flooding along shorelines and tidal waterways, with up to one half foot of water expected above ground level. High tide is forecast for around 12:45 PM EDT in Charleston, and saltwater inundation could begin 1 to 2 hours before and after the tide peaks.

Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to prepare for potential flooding of roads, which may become impassable. If travel is necessary, allow extra time, and never attempt to drive through flooded roads.

Moderate Rip Current Risk at Atlantic Coast Beaches

In addition to the flooding risk, the NWS has issued a Moderate Risk for rip currents along the South Carolina coast through this evening. Beachgoers should exercise caution when swimming and are encouraged to swim near lifeguards. Rip currents can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, making them extremely dangerous for those caught unaware.

    Be Prepared for Coastal Flooding

The following precautions are recommended for residents and travelers in the affected areas:

    • Avoid driving through flooded roads and adhere to any road closures.
    • Protect flood-prone property ahead of the anticipated high tide.
    • For updates on water levels and additional flood impact information, visit National Weather Service.
