High Winds and Heavy Rain Expected to Impact Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa

Honolulu, HI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 11:12 PM HST on Friday, August 23, 2024.

Tropical Storm Winds to Batter Big Island Summits

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for the Big Island Summits, including Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, where tropical storm-force winds are forecast to hit beginning Saturday morning and last until early Sunday morning. Wind speeds are expected to reach 35-45 mph, with gusts as high as 65 mph.

The public is urged to prepare for hazardous conditions by securing loose objects and moving to safe shelter before the winds become dangerous. While the winds could cause limited damage, they may still result in downed trees, damage to structures, and scattered power outages. Drivers are advised to exercise caution, particularly on elevated roads and bridges.

Heavy Rain and Flooding Pose Significant Threat

In addition to the winds, heavy rainfall is forecast for the area, with 3-6 inches of rain expected and even higher amounts in localized areas. A Flood Watch is in effect, with the potential for moderate flooding, especially in low-lying areas, poor drainage spots, and near rivers and tributaries.

Residents in vulnerable areas should be prepared for flooding, which could result in road closures, dangerous driving conditions, and rapid inundation in urban and rural locations. Evacuations and rescues are possible in areas that experience significant floodwaters.

    Tornado Risk Remains Low

The NWS states that the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, meaning the tornado threat is minimal. However, residents should remain vigilant for changing weather conditions and listen for updates regarding any potential developments in the forecast.

    Be Prepared and Stay Safe

Residents and visitors to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are urged to complete all necessary preparations for the incoming storm as soon as possible. With the potential for both wind and flood damage, it is crucial to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel once the storm begins.
