CHANHASSEN – Residents in central Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin are facing an extreme weather event as the National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the region, effective today and extending into Monday. With heat indices projected to soar between 100 and 112 degrees, the region also faces the threat of severe thunderstorms, including large hail, damaging winds, and the potential for tornadoes.

    Excessive Heat Warning in Effect

The heat will peak today, with areas along the Minnesota River Valley, including Yellow Medicine, Renville, Redwood, and Brown counties, under an Excessive Heat Warning until 8 PM Monday. Heat indices in these regions could reach as high as 112 degrees, with other parts of central and southern Minnesota under a Heat Advisory, experiencing heat indices ranging from 100 to 110 degrees. The National Weather Service is urging residents to take extreme precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

    Severe Thunderstorms Expected

While the heat intensifies, severe thunderstorms are also forecasted to hit Minnesota and Wisconsin on Monday night. The National Weather Service has issued an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather across Minnesota, while Wisconsin falls under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5). The storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, and the possibility of tornadoes, making it crucial for residents to monitor weather alerts closely and prepare for potential severe conditions.

    Spotter Activation Anticipated

Due to the increased risk of severe storms, SKYWARN spotter activation will likely be needed Monday night. Spotters are encouraged to report severe weather conditions such as hail, strong winds, and tornadoes to the National Weather Service.
