Hazardous Weather Outlook Highlights Heat Index of 107 Degrees and Potential for Severe Storms

GOLDEN VALLEY, MNIssued by the National Weather Service at 3:19 AM CDT on August 26, 2024.

Excessive Heat Warning Remains in Effect for Twin Cities and Surrounding Areas

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the Twin Cities metro and surrounding areas in central, south central, and southwest Minnesota. This warning is in effect until 8 PM CDT Monday, August 26, 2024, with dangerously hot conditions persisting throughout the day.

Heat index values are expected to reach up to 107 degrees in the Twin Cities, and even higher, up to 112 degrees, in south central Minnesota. These conditions increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

    Residents are urged to:

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
    • Avoid outdoor activities and stay in air-conditioned environments.
    • Check on neighbors and family members, especially those who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
    • Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes.

Severe Thunderstorm Threat Tonight: Enhanced Risk for Tornadoes

In addition to the oppressive heat, the region is also under an Enhanced Risk of severe thunderstorms tonight. The NWS warns of the potential for multiple rounds of thunderstorms, which may bring large hail, damaging winds, and even a few tornadoes.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions. SKYWARN spotter activation will likely be needed this evening as the storms develop.
