    Heat Advisory for Southeast Michigan

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for southeast Michigan, in effect from 10 AM to 10 PM EDT on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Heat index values are expected to reach as high as 102 degrees in areas such as Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, Pontiac, and Monroe.

These extreme heat and humidity conditions pose a risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

    Potential for Severe Thunderstorms

In addition to the extreme heat, Southeast Michigan is under a heightened risk for severe thunderstorms today. The NWS warns that any thunderstorm activity could bring large hail up to 1 inch in diameter and damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph.

Residents should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and be prepared for possible severe weather throughout the day and into the night.

Precautions for Heat and Severe Weather

The NWS advises the following precautions:

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
    • Remain indoors in air-conditioned environments during peak heat hours.
    • Check on relatives and neighbors, especially the elderly and those without air conditioning.
    • Be prepared for thunderstorms by securing outdoor objects and staying indoors during storm activity.

Spotter activation may be needed later today and tonight due to the potential for severe storms.
