Severe Weather Alerts: Thunderstorms and Strong Currents Pose Risks Across Region

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:03 AM on August 28, 2024.

    Thunderstorms Loom Over Southeast Michigan

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for southeast Michigan this week, warning residents to prepare for thunderstorms and dangerous beach conditions. Today and tonight, an isolated thunderstorm could hit the region, with more chances for storms throughout the afternoon and evening.

The situation remains volatile, with another significant chance for thunderstorms anticipated on Friday as a cold front sweeps through the area. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and monitor weather updates frequently.

Beach Hazards: Strong Currents on Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 10 AM to 8 PM today for Huron County. Swimmers are urged to stay out of the water, as hazardous swim conditions are expected on Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. Strong currents pose a high risk of pulling swimmers into deeper waters, making conditions particularly dangerous for recreational activities along the coast.

    Preparation and Safety Advice

Residents and visitors should exercise caution and take preventative measures to stay safe:

    • Avoid swimming in areas with strong currents or warnings.
    • Seek shelter during thunderstorms, especially in open or exposed areas.
    • Stay informed by checking updates from trusted news sources or the National Weather Service.

    Spotter Activation Not Needed

While the NWS does not expect to activate weather spotters for today and tonight, conditions may change rapidly. All residents should remain alert and prepared for potential weather developments over the coming days.
