    Strong thunderstorms overnight bring 70 mph winds, damage risk to Grand Forks, Polk County, and beyond.

    [GRAND FORKS] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:34 AM CDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

    A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for parts of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota as strong storms with winds up to 70 mph swept through the area early this morning. The National Weather Service in Grand Forks has warned of considerable tree damage, potential harm to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings.

    Areas Affected by the Severe Thunderstorm Warning

    The storm, located over Hatton, 27 miles southwest of Grand Forks, is moving northeast at 35 mph. Communities in the path of the storm include Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, Crookston, Mayville, Thompson, Portland, and Fisher. The warning is active until 4:30 AM CDT, affecting travel on Interstate 29 between mile markers 113 and 138.

    Residents are advised to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building to stay safe from potential debris and damage.

    Severe Weather Outlook for the Coming Days

    The National Weather Service has classified the storm risk as a Level 1 out of 5, with the primary threats being hail up to the size of ping-pong balls and wind gusts up to 60 mph. The threat is expected to continue through the night in parts of eastern North Dakota.

    Thursday also brings a renewed risk of strong thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon. The National Weather Service urges residents to remain alert and prepared for rapidly changing conditions.

    Spotter activation may be required today, according to the National Weather Service, as additional storms are anticipated. Community members are encouraged to report any severe weather they observe to help track storm development and impact.
