    [DETROIT] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:07 AM EDT on Friday, August 30, 2024.

    A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for southeast Michigan today as a cold front moves through the region, bringing the potential for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Meanwhile, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Huron River near Hamburg, where minor flooding is currently occurring and expected to continue.

    Severe Thunderstorm Threat This Afternoon and Evening

    The National Weather Service warns of a Slight Risk for severe weather across areas including Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Genesee, Lapeer, St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. Thunderstorms will develop along a cold front with the potential for:

    • Damaging wind gusts as the primary threat.
    • Possible large hail or an isolated tornado.

    Storms are expected to move from southwest to northeast at 35 mph, initially forming as discrete cells before possibly transitioning into a more linear storm structure.

    Precautionary Tips:

    • Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.
    • Monitor local weather alerts and be prepared to take shelter if severe weather approaches.
    • Spotter activation may be needed today, and residents are encouraged to report any severe weather.

    Flood Warning for Huron River Near Hamburg

    The Flood Warning for the Huron River near Hamburg in Livingston County remains in effect until further notice. The river level was at 7.1 feet as of 9:15 PM EDT Thursday and is forecasted to crest at 7.3 feet by Friday evening, above the flood stage of 7.0 feet. Minor flooding is expected to continue, impacting low-lying areas along the river.

    Flood Impacts:

    • Flooding of roads and low-lying properties near the river.
    • Increased caution is advised at night when it is harder to recognize flooding hazards.
