Isolated Lightning Storms, Sweltering Heat, and Dangerous Rip Currents Expected

MELBOURNE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:27 AM on August 30, 2024.

Thunderstorms Expected to Impact Central Florida

The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for east central Florida, predicting isolated thunderstorms and sweltering heat throughout the region today and into the holiday weekend. Residents can expect onshore-moving lightning storms, with isolated to scattered diurnal storms developing near the coast in the morning and pushing inland by late morning through the afternoon. The storms are expected to move towards the western side of the peninsula by early evening, but outflow boundaries could sustain isolated inland storms into the night.

Some thunderstorms may become severe, bringing gusty winds up to 45 mph, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Those in the affected areas are urged to exercise caution, particularly when venturing outdoors.

    Excessive Heat to Accompany Storms

The heat index is expected to reach dangerous levels, with values generally around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and some interior spots could soar up to 104 degrees. This combination of heat and humidity poses a significant risk, making it essential for residents to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.

From Saturday through Thursday, the pattern of afternoon lightning storms will persist, with an increased likelihood of storms from Sunday onward. The oppressive heat and humidity are forecasted to continue, with heat index values potentially rising up to 106 degrees, further compounding the risks for outdoor activities.

Moderate Risk of Dangerous Rip Currents

A Moderate Risk of rip currents continues along all central Florida Atlantic beaches, with conditions expected to persist through the holiday weekend. The National Weather Service urges beachgoers to always swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone. The treacherous surf conditions necessitate extra vigilance, especially for those unfamiliar with rip current safety.
