Bomb Squad Clears Area After Investigation of Suspected Explosive

This morning, a bomb scare at a doctor's office near McLaren Thumb Region Hospital in Colfax Township led to the evacuation of several nearby buildings, including parts of the hospital. Huron Central Dispatch received a report shortly after 9:00 a.m. from hospital staff who discovered a package inside the office that resembled a bomb. Additionally, the office contained spent ammunition and gun parts, which heightened concerns and prompted a swift response from local authorities.

Evacuations and Response by Multiple Agencies

Upon receiving the report, a deputy from the Huron County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the scene. As a precautionary measure, the hospital and adjacent buildings were evacuated to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and the general public. The office in question was not open for business at the time of the incident, reducing potential risks to individuals within the immediate vicinity.

Responding agencies included the Michigan State Police, the Bad Axe Fire Department, and hospital security and operations personnel, all of whom collaborated to secure the area and manage the situation. The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in to investigate the package and assess the potential threat.

Suspicious Package Deemed Non-Threatening After Inspection

After a thorough inspection by the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, the suspicious package was determined to be a modified set of lithium batteries wired and packaged together, reportedly intended for use on a scooter. The package, while alarming in appearance, was ultimately found to be non-threatening. The accompanying spent ammunition and gun parts found in the office, although unusual for a medical environment, did not pose an immediate danger.

An interview with the doctor associated with the office was conducted as part of the investigation. Following the clearance by the Bomb Squad and the completion of the interview, operations at the hospital complex returned to normal just before noon.

Community and First Responders' Swift Actions Praised

Huron County Sheriff Kelly J. Hanson praised the swift and coordinated response by all involved agencies, emphasizing the importance of caution and public safety in handling suspicious situations. The prompt evacuation and thorough investigation helped to ensure the safety of the community and prevent any potential harm.

Residents and staff were allowed to return to their routines shortly after the area was declared safe, with no injuries reported during the incident. The response by local law enforcement and emergency personnel underscored their commitment to protecting the community from potential threats, however minor they may ultimately prove to be.
