Excessive Rainfall Threatens Flash Flooding in Low-Lying Areas

CORPUS CHRISTI — Issued by the National Weather Service at 8:54 AM CDT on September 3, 2024.

Flood Watch in Effect Through Wednesday Evening

A Flood Watch is currently in effect across South Texas, including areas such as Aransas Islands, Calhoun Islands, Coastal Aransas, Coastal Calhoun, Coastal Kleberg, Coastal Nueces, Coastal Refugio, Coastal San Patricio, Duval, Inland Calhoun, Inland Kleberg, Inland Nueces, Inland Refugio, Inland San Patricio, Jim Wells, Kleberg Islands, La Salle, McMullen, Nueces Islands, Victoria, and Webb counties. The National Weather Service warns that flash flooding is possible due to excessive rainfall expected through Wednesday evening.

    Rainfall Totals and Flooding Risks

Recent heavy rains have already dumped between 2 to 7 inches across portions of South Texas, with an additional 2 to 4 inches, and isolated amounts up to 6 inches, expected through the watch period. Rainfall rates could reach 3 inches per hour, exacerbating flood risks in areas with saturated soil, low-lying regions, and urban locations with poor drainage.

The risk of flooding extends to rivers, creeks, and streams, with potential impacts on low-water crossings and other flood-prone locations. Motorists are advised to avoid driving through flooded roads and to be vigilant in monitoring changing conditions.

    Preparation and Safety Measures

Residents in the affected areas should stay informed of the latest forecasts and be ready to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Emergency preparations include securing property, avoiding unnecessary travel, and being prepared to move to higher ground if necessary.
