Storms and Waterspouts Threaten Great Lakes: Hazardous Weather Alert Issued

    2024-09-05

Thunderstorms, Cold Front, and Waterspouts Possible Over the Weekend

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:06 AM on September 5, 2024.

    Thunderstorms Expected Tonight and Friday

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a hazardous weather outlook affecting portions of Lake Erie, Lake Huron, and Lake St. Clair. A cold front is expected to move through the area, bringing a chance of thunderstorms tonight and Friday. While these storms are not predicted to be severe, boaters and residents in the region should stay alert to changing conditions.

Slight Chance of Waterspouts Through the Weekend

As seasonally cool air pushes into the region, the NWS warns of a slight chance of waterspouts on Friday, continuing into the weekend. Waterspouts are tornado-like phenomena that occur over water and can pose a significant risk to small watercraft and shoreline activities.

Cooler Temperatures with Cold Front Passage

The cold front will usher in cooler temperatures across the Great Lakes, making for a noticeable change from recent warm weather. Although the thunderstorms associated with this front are expected to be non-severe, they could still bring localized heavy rain and gusty winds.

    Spotter Activation Not Anticipated

At this time, spotter activation is not required, as severe weather is not expected. However, NWS urges the public to monitor conditions closely as weather can change rapidly, particularly over large bodies of water like the Great Lakes.
