Frost and Thunderstorms Expected Across Minnesota and Wisconsin

    2024-09-05

Cooler Temperatures Bring Frost Risk; Isolated Thunderstorms Possible

DULUTH — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:26 AM on September 5, 2024.

    Scattered Thunderstorms Likely This Morning

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Duluth has issued a hazardous weather outlook for northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, covering areas such as Koochiching, St. Louis, Cook, Itasca, Cass, and Aitkin counties, as well as Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron counties in Wisconsin. Isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms are expected this morning; however, severe weather is not anticipated.

Frost Possible Friday Night Across the Northland

Looking ahead, a significant drop in temperatures is expected Friday night, bringing a 50-70% chance of frost for areas inland from Lake Superior. This frost could impact sensitive plants and early fall crops, so residents should take precautions to protect vulnerable vegetation.

Thunderstorms Expected Again Friday Afternoon and Evening

A few thunderstorms are also possible from central Minnesota into parts of northwest Wisconsin on Friday afternoon and evening. Like the earlier storms, these are not expected to be severe but could still bring brief rain showers and occasional lightning.

Skywarn Spotters Encouraged to Report Weather Observations

Skywarn spotters are encouraged to report any hail and rainfall amounts to the NWS, even though severe storms are not expected.
