Flood Watch in Effect for Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi Through Saturday

    2024-09-05

Heavy Rainfall Threatens Flooding in New Orleans and Surrounding Areas

NEW ORLEANS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:24 AM on September 5, 2024.

Significant Rainfall Continues to Threaten Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi

The National Weather Service (NWS) in New Orleans has issued an extended Flood Watch for portions of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, including major areas such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Houma, Biloxi, and Gulfport. The watch remains in effect through Saturday morning due to ongoing and anticipated heavy rainfall that may lead to significant flooding.

Rainfall Totals and Areas at Risk

In the past 24 hours, the New Orleans metropolitan area and nearby regions have received 2 to 5 inches of rain. Forecasts predict an additional 3 to 5 inches of rain in the next 48 hours, with localized areas, especially near the coast, potentially seeing totals as high as 8 to 10 inches. The excessive rainfall poses a risk of flooding for rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying areas. Urban and poorly drained regions are particularly susceptible to flooding.

    Potential Impacts and Safety Precautions

Flooding may occur quickly, especially in areas prone to poor drainage or along flood-prone roadways. Residents are urged to stay alert to changing conditions and be prepared to take action if Flood Warnings are issued. Motorists should exercise caution, avoid driving through flooded areas, and heed any road closures or barricades.

    Preparation Tips:

    • Monitor local weather updates and alerts.
    • Keep an emergency kit with essentials in case of flooding.
    • Have a plan in place if evacuation becomes necessary.
    • Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; just a few inches of moving water can be dangerous.
