HELENA, MTThe Montana Democratic Party (MDP) has issued a strong rebuke of U.S. Senate candidate Tim Sheehy following his recent comments calling for abortion “all to end tomorrow.” The statement, released by MDP Executive Director Sheila Hogan, criticizes Sheehy’s extreme position on reproductive rights, warning that his views represent a direct threat to Montanans’ freedom to make their own healthcare decisions.

MDP’s Strong Response to Sheehy's Statements

“In Montana, we value our freedoms, and that means having the freedom to make our own healthcare decisions,” Hogan stated. “Transplant Tim Sheehy wants the government to make these decisions for us.” She highlighted that Sheehy’s extreme rhetoric and desire to ban abortion nationwide align with his broader agenda to undermine reproductive rights in Montana.

Sheehy’s controversial statements on abortion include calling the procedure “sinful,” “terrible,” and “a repulsive thing to do.” His stance goes beyond abortion, as he also opposes CI-128, a ballot measure designed to protect reproductive freedoms in Montana, and has rejected federal protections for IVF treatments and birth control. Sheehy has previously referred to abortion as “murder,” further illustrating his hardline position.

    Implications for Montana’s Upcoming Elections

With the upcoming elections, the MDP is mobilizing to counter Sheehy’s stance on reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood President and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson is campaigning in Montana in support of Senator Jon Tester, highlighting the high stakes of the race for reproductive freedoms. Johnson’s presence underscores the importance of protecting abortion rights and access to reproductive healthcare at the state level.

Hogan urged Montana voters to reject Sheehy’s extreme views at the ballot box, emphasizing that his approach to abortion does not reflect the values of Montanans who cherish their freedoms. “Tim Sheehy wants to take away our freedoms. This November, Montana women will reject him and his extreme position at the ballot box,” Hogan concluded.

Sheehy’s Opposition to CI-128 and Broader Reproductive Rights

CI-128, the ballot measure Sheehy opposes, aims to enshrine reproductive rights in Montana, protecting access to abortion and other reproductive healthcare services from legislative interference. By opposing CI-128, Sheehy is positioned against a significant measure that seeks to safeguard Montanans' rights to make personal health decisions.

Sheehy’s campaign has not responded to the MDP’s statement, but his record and comments on abortion have already sparked controversy and become a focal point of the Senate race. As the election draws closer, reproductive rights are expected to remain a key issue, with Montana voters set to make critical decisions about the future of healthcare freedoms in the state.
