Stay Out of the Water: High Waves and Strong Currents on Lake Huron in Southeast Michigan

    2024-09-07

Strong Currents and High Waves Pose Danger Along Southeast Michigan Beaches

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:01 AM on September 7, 2024.

Beach Hazards Statement in Effect for Southeast Michigan

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Detroit/Pontiac has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for the shores of Huron, Sanilac, and St. Clair counties through this evening. Swimmers and beachgoers are advised to remain out of the water due to high wave action and strong currents in Lake Huron, which present dangerous swimming conditions.

    Dangerous Swimming Conditions Expected

The NWS warns of a high swim risk due to strong currents that can pull swimmers into deep water, significantly increasing the risk of drowning. These currents, combined with high waves, make it difficult for even the strongest swimmers to return to shore safely. Residents and visitors in the affected areas are urged to stay out of the water until conditions improve.

    Precautionary Actions Advised

Residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution around the lake and avoid swimming. The conditions are hazardous and can rapidly change, putting lives at risk. Beachgoers should also be cautious near piers, jetties, and other structures where rip currents are more likely to form.

No Additional Hazards Expected for the Week

Beyond the immediate beach hazards, the NWS does not expect any further hazardous weather conditions in the region from Sunday through Friday. Spotter activation is not anticipated, and no additional warnings have been issued at this time.
