Dangerous Lake Michigan Swimming Conditions and Fire Risks Expected Due to Dry Weather

CHICAGO — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:54 PM CDT on September 7, 2024.

Beach Hazards Statement: Dangerous Waves and Currents Continue on Lake Michigan

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago/Romeoville has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Lake, Northern Cook, and Central Cook counties in Illinois, and Lake and Porter counties in Indiana. This statement remains in effect until 4 AM CDT Sunday, with waves expected to reach 3 to 6 feet along Lake Michigan. The high wave action and dangerous currents create life-threatening swimming conditions, particularly for inexperienced swimmers. Residents and visitors are advised to stay out of the water and avoid piers, jetties, breakwalls, and other shoreline structures.

Extended Period of Dry Weather Increases Fire Risk Next Week

From Monday through Friday, the region will experience above-average temperatures, dry conditions, and low afternoon humidity, creating a limited fire weather risk. These conditions can lead to increased chances of grass and brush fires, especially as vegetation becomes more dormant. Fortunately, strong winds are not expected, which should help minimize the potential for rapid fire spread or growth.

Precautionary Actions for Beachgoers and Residents

    • Stay Out of the Water: High waves and dangerous currents make swimming conditions hazardous. Avoid entering Lake Michigan, especially near piers and breakwalls.
    • Monitor Fire Safety: With dry and warm conditions forecasted, avoid activities that could spark fires, such as burning debris or using equipment that generates sparks.
    • Stay Informed: Check local advisories and updates, particularly if planning to visit Lake Michigan beaches or engage in outdoor activities.

    Spotter Information and Activation

Spotter activation will not be needed tonight, as no severe weather is expected. However, spotters and residents should remain alert for changing conditions and report any significant weather events to local authorities.
