Frost Advisory in Effect for Northeast West Virginia: Protect Sensitive Plants

    2024-09-08

Cold Morning Brings Frost Risk to Mountain Valleys in Pocahontas, Randolph, and Webster Counties

CHARLESTON — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:07 AM EDT on September 8, 2024.

Frost Advisory: Cold Temperatures Bring Frost Risk to Mountain Areas

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston has issued a Frost Advisory for parts of northeast West Virginia, including Northwest Pocahontas, Southeast Pocahontas, Southeast Randolph, and Southeast Webster counties. The advisory remains in effect until 9 AM EDT this morning, as temperatures are expected to drop as low as 34°F, leading to the potential for frost formation.

Sensitive Vegetation at Risk in Protected Mountain Valleys

The coldest temperatures and highest frost risk will occur in better protected mountain valleys where limited drainage can lead to colder conditions. Residents are advised to take precautions to protect tender plants from the cold, as frost could harm or even kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered. Frost formation is most likely in low spots and areas with limited airflow.

Additional Frost Risk Early Monday Morning

The potential for patchy frost returns early Monday morning, with temperatures expected to dip once again into the 30s in some areas. Residents should be prepared for another cold start and continue to protect vulnerable plants and crops.

No Severe Weather Expected for the Week Ahead

From Monday through Saturday, no hazardous weather is expected beyond the potential for patchy frost early Monday. Spotter activation is not required, and weather conditions are forecasted to be generally calm throughout the week.

    Precautionary Actions for Residents

    • Protect Plants: Cover sensitive plants or bring them indoors to prevent damage from frost.
    • Monitor Temperature Changes: Keep an eye on overnight temperatures, especially if residing in areas prone to colder conditions.
