Frost Advisory Hits Western Maryland, Virginia, and Eastern West Virginia

Cold Snap Threatens Early Morning Frost

Frederick — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:25 AM on September 9, 2024.

A Frost Advisory remains in effect across portions of western Maryland, northwest and western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia this morning. Temperatures are expected to dip as low as 33 degrees Fahrenheit, posing a threat to sensitive outdoor vegetation.

Frost Advisory in Effect Until 9 AM

Residents in areas including Garrett, Extreme Western Allegany, and Central and Eastern Allegany in Maryland; Augusta, Rockingham, and surrounding counties in Virginia; as well as parts of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia, should take immediate precautions. The advisory, issued by the National Weather Service, is in place until 9 AM EDT, with frost likely to form in sheltered valleys and low-lying areas.

Impact on Vegetation and Precautionary Measures

With temperatures dropping to near-freezing levels, there is a heightened risk for frost, which could damage or even kill tender plants if left unprotected. The National Weather Service advises residents to cover sensitive plants or bring them indoors where possible.

"This sudden drop in temperature can have a significant impact on local agriculture and home gardens," stated a weather official. "It's crucial to take necessary steps now to protect vulnerable vegetation from the cold."

Weather Outlook for the Coming Days

Looking ahead, no additional hazardous weather conditions are expected from Tuesday through Sunday. The cold snap is anticipated to be brief, with temperatures expected to rebound during the day. Spotter activation is not required at this time, and the overall outlook for the region remains stable after today.
