Tropical Storm Francine is expected to strengthen into a hurricane, bringing life-threatening storm surges, heavy rains, and powerful winds to Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi.

Francine to Deliver Devastating Floods, Winds, and Storm Surges to Gulf Coast

NEW ORLEANS — Issued by the National Weather Service at 10:46 PM CDT on September 9, 2024.

Francine Expected to Strengthen: Hurricane Watches in Effect

Tropical Storm Francine continues to churn towards the Gulf Coast, threatening to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall along the Louisiana coast late Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a series of warnings, including Storm Surge Warnings, Tropical Storm Warnings, and Hurricane Watches across Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. The storm, currently moving north-northwest at 5 mph with sustained winds of 65 mph, poses a significant risk of life-threatening storm surges, extensive flooding, and damaging winds.

    Life-Threatening Storm Surges Expected

Residents along the coast and near lakeshores in Southeast Louisiana and Southern Mississippi should brace for devastating storm surges that could lead to widespread deep inundation. The NWS warns of possible structural damage to buildings, severe beach erosion, and flooding of escape routes and secondary roads. Areas like Coastal Jefferson Parish, Lower Lafourche, and Lower Terrebonne are under direct threat, with some locations potentially becoming uninhabitable for extended periods.

Wind and Rainfall Pose Significant Dangers

Francine is expected to bring life-threatening winds with gusts that may cause extensive damage across the region. Sturdy buildings could suffer significant roof damage, while mobile homes are at risk of severe destruction. The potential for major flooding from excessive rainfall also looms large, especially in areas already saturated from recent rains. Up to 12 inches of rain could fall in isolated spots, causing rivers and streams to overflow and roads to become dangerous or impassable.

Tornado Risk Heightens Across the Region

The NWS also warns of a potential for isolated tornadoes as Francine moves inland, which could further complicate emergency response efforts. Residents should remain vigilant, as tornadoes can develop quickly during tropical storms, leading to sudden damage to structures, trees, and power lines.

    Preparedness and Evacuation Measures

Officials urge residents to follow local evacuation orders and complete preparations immediately. Those living in flood-prone areas, particularly near the coast or low-lying regions, should plan to move to higher ground. With storm conditions expected to worsen rapidly, it’s critical to stay informed through reliable sources like NOAA Weather Radio and local news outlets.
