Dense Fog Blankets Southeast Michigan, Creating Hazardous Morning Commutes

Visibility Reduced to Half a Mile or Less in Parts of Oakland and Wayne Counties

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 5:29 AM on September 11, 2024.

Foggy Morning Causes Visibility Issues in Metro Detroit

DETROITSoutheast Michigan residents are waking up to dense fog this morning, causing potentially hazardous driving conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a special weather statement for Oakland and Wayne Counties, including the cities of Pontiac and Detroit, due to fog that is expected to linger until 9 AM. Visibility in some areas has been reduced to half a mile or less, posing a risk for drivers, especially on metro Detroit interstates.

Dense Fog Affects Central and Western Wayne County

The dense fog is predominantly affecting central and western Wayne County along with much of southern and central Oakland County. The NWS advises motorists to exercise caution, reduce speeds, and increase following distances due to rapidly changing visibility. Commuters are urged to use headlights and avoid using high beams, which can worsen visibility in foggy conditions.

No Further Hazardous Weather Expected This Week

Following today’s foggy conditions, the NWS does not anticipate any further hazardous weather for Southeast Michigan through Tuesday. As always, residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather conditions, especially if planning travel or outdoor activities in the affected areas.
