Severe Weather Threatens Central Alabama: Flood Watch and Wind Advisory Issued

Tropical Storm Francine Brings Heavy Rain, Wind, and Tornado Threats

BIRMINGHAM — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:48 AM on September 11, 2024.

Central Alabama is bracing for severe weather as Tropical Depression Francine makes landfall along the Louisiana coast today, moving inland toward southern Mississippi by tonight. The National Weather Service in Birmingham has issued a Flood Watch and Wind Advisory, with potential for locally heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and brief tornadoes across the region.

Flood Watch: Significant Rainfall Expected Through Friday Evening

A Flood Watch is in effect through Friday evening across Central Alabama. As Francine pushes inland, waves of showers and thunderstorms are expected to dump 2 to 4 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts reaching 6 to 9 inches in some areas. This heavy rainfall is anticipated to cause urban and flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Affected Counties Include: Autauga, Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Chambers, Cherokee, Chilton, Clay, Cleburne, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Etowah, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston.

Flood Precautions: Stay Alert and Be Prepared

Residents should monitor local forecasts and be ready to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Flooding is likely in areas with poor drainage and urban centers prone to water accumulation. The NWS advises keeping travel plans flexible and avoiding driving through flooded roads, as water levels can rise rapidly.

Wind Advisory: Gusts Up to 45 mph May Cause Damage

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until midnight CDT tonight. Central Alabama is expected to experience southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. These strong winds could result in downed tree limbs, unsecured objects being blown around, and sporadic power outages.

Wind Safety: Secure Loose Items and Drive with Caution

Residents should secure outdoor items, such as patio furniture and trash cans, to prevent them from being blown away by the wind. Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution as gusty winds could make driving difficult.

Tornado Threat: Brief Tornadoes Possible Across Central Alabama

In addition to flooding and wind concerns, the NWS warns of the possibility of brief tornadoes developing in association with the outer bands of Francine. All residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, keep weather radios on, and be prepared to seek shelter immediately if a Tornado Warning is issued.
