Flood Watch Extended for Western Georgia: Heavy Rainfall Raises Flooding Concerns

Western Georgia Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Potential Flooding Through Sunday Morning

ATLANTA — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:00 AM EDT on September 14, 2024.

Western Georgia is under a Flood Watch as persistent heavy rainfall continues to pose a significant flooding threat through Sunday morning. The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has extended the Flood Watch to include numerous counties across central, northwest, and west central Georgia.

Flood Watch in Effect Through Sunday Morning

Counties under the Flood Watch include Carroll, Heard, Coweta, Troup, Meriwether, Pike, Upson, Harris, Talbot, Taylor, Muscogee, Chattahoochee, Marion, Schley, Macon, Stewart, Webster, Sumter, Dooly, and Crisp. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant as excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Additional rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with localized amounts potentially reaching up to 3 inches in the heaviest downpours.

Potential for Flash Flooding in Western Georgia

The Flood Watch covers regions that have already experienced substantial rainfall, raising the risk of flash flooding and continued flooding concerns into the weekend. The areas most at risk include cities such as Columbus, Carrollton, Americus, and Newnan, where flooding of roads, parks, and properties could occur, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and areas with poor drainage.

Prepare for Rising Waters and Travel Disruptions

Residents in the affected counties are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and prepare for potential flooding. If you live in an area prone to flooding, take steps now to protect your property and have an emergency plan in place. Motorists should be cautious of flooded roads and avoid driving through water of unknown depth, as it may be deeper and more dangerous than it appears.

Extended Flood Threat Through the Weekend

Heavy rainfall will continue to be a threat through Sunday across western Georgia. Rainfall totals from the past few days have saturated the ground, making additional rainfall more likely to result in flooding. The forecast calls for periods of heavy rain through Sunday, with flash flooding remaining a concern for areas under the Flood Watch.
