Snow Alert: Yosemite and Surrounding Areas Brace for Early Winter Blast

Winter Weather Advisory in Effect Above 8,000 Feet; Hazardous Travel Expected

[HANFORD] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 8:52 PM on September 13, 2024.

Winter Weather Advisory: Snow and High Winds Expected in the Sierra

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for parts of Yosemite National Park, Upper San Joaquin River, Kaiser to Rodgers Ridge, and Kings Canyon National Park from 11 PM Sunday to 5 PM PDT Monday. The advisory impacts areas above 8,000 feet, including notable locations such as Tuolumne Meadows, Wawona, Devils Postpile, Florence Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Lake Wishon, Huntington Lake, Shaver Lake, and Cedar Grove.

Snowfall of up to four inches is anticipated, with winds gusting as high as 40 mph, creating potentially dangerous conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises that slippery roads and low visibility could make travel hazardous. Motorists should exercise caution, particularly on Tioga Pass and other high-elevation routes.

    Chances of Significant Snow Accumulation

There is a 45% chance of at least three inches of snow at Tuolumne Meadows, where temperatures are expected to drop below freezing. Tioga Pass is projected to have a 55% probability of three inches or more, making it one of the more impacted routes.

The NWS warns that travelers should be prepared for sudden weather changes and advises carrying chains and winter gear. Slowing down and increasing following distances on snowy roads can help mitigate risks.

    Impacts and Precautions

Plan ahead if you’re heading to the mountains. The combination of snow and gusty winds can cause slick conditions and delays, particularly on less traveled roads and high mountain passes.

For up-to-date road conditions in California, travelers are encouraged to dial 511.
