Southeast Michigan Basks in Extended Warm and Dry Streak

Southeast Michigan is enjoying an extended stretch of warm, dry weather that is expected to continue through Friday, with only a modest increase in cloud cover from a distant tropical system.

Sunshine Stays: Dry Spell Extends for SE Michigan with Slight Chance of Weekend Rain

DETROIT — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:53 AM EDT on September 17, 2024.

Extended Warm and Dry Weather Holds Steady in SE Michigan

Southeast Michigan is experiencing a prolonged period of unseasonably warm and dry weather, now stretching into its 11th consecutive day without precipitation. This remarkable weather pattern is driven by a large-scale 500 mb ridge and associated high pressure that remains locked over the Great Lakes and the Northeastern United States. This setup has produced above-normal temperatures, with highs expected to reach around 80 degrees today, and even warmer conditions likely toward the Tri-Cities and interior Lower Michigan.

Minimal Impact from Mid Atlantic Tropical System

A tropical system currently drifting inland over the Mid Atlantic region is not expected to significantly impact Michigan's weather, other than bringing some high cloud cover tonight and into Wednesday. These clouds may slightly temper the recent high temperatures but will not disrupt the ongoing dry spell.

Weekend Outlook: Weak Cold Front Brings Small Chance of Rain

Looking ahead, a weak cold front associated with a system from the Plains is projected to approach Lower Michigan by Friday into Saturday. While this front may bring a small chance of light, spotty rain showers, it remains moisture-starved and lacks the strength to significantly alter the current dry conditions. The forecast suggests any rainfall will be minimal, and dry weather will likely dominate through the end of the week.

Marine Conditions: Favorable for the Great Lakes

For the Great Lakes region, sprawling high pressure continues to govern conditions, offering mainly dry weather and light southeast winds (below 15 knots). The distant subtropical cyclone over the Carolinas is expected to collapse over South Carolina and Georgia, ensuring the resident high-pressure ridge remains in control and maintains favorable marine conditions into the weekend.
