Dense Fog Advisory Issued for the Mid-South, Dry and Seasonal Weather to Follow

Dense fog advisory in effect this morning; clear skies and seasonal temperatures expected throughout the week.

Fog Advisory in Effect as Mid-South Prepares for Clear, Calm Week

[MEMPHIS, TN] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:11 AM CDT on September 17, 2024.

    Dense Fog Advisory in Effect

A Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for parts of the Mid-South, including eastern Arkansas, northern Mississippi, and western Tennessee, until 9 AM CDT this morning. Fog development is underway due to clear skies, calm winds, and lingering moisture from recent rainfall, leading to visibility below one-quarter mile in some areas. Drivers are urged to proceed with caution and allow extra time for their morning commute as conditions could impact travel.

Clear Skies and Seasonal Temperatures Ahead

The region will experience a calm and stable weather pattern this week under an Omega Blocking pattern, which features a high-pressure system centered over the Mid-South. This pattern will bring clear skies and light winds, with daytime highs in the 80s and morning lows in the upper 50s to 60s.

    Fog Likely to Persist Overnight

Given the conditions, fog formation is expected to continue each night, although with a gradual drying trend throughout the week, fog density should decrease over time. While this morning’s advisory is likely the most impactful, drivers should remain alert for patchy fog during the early morning hours on subsequent days.

Rain Chances Minimal Until Next Week

Under the influence of this high-pressure system, the weather will remain dry through the forecast period. The next significant chance of rain is not expected until next week, as the ridge maintains its grip on the region.

    Aviation Outlook

For aviation purposes, visibility reductions due to fog are anticipated at JBR, MKL, and TUP airports early this morning. The fog is expected to lift around sunrise, with light northeast winds prevailing through the TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecast) period.
