Heat Advisory Issued as Scorching Temperatures and Storms Approach

Byline: Duluth — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:21 AM CDT on Sunday, August 25, 2024.

DULUTHResidents across northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin are preparing for an extreme weather event as the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory and warned of scattered thunderstorms for the area. With heat indices expected to reach up to 101 degrees, and the potential for strong to severe storms, the region faces significant weather risks early this week.

Patchy Dense Fog and Muggy Conditions Today

The day began with patchy dense fog across parts of northeast Minnesota, temporarily reducing visibility to less than 1/2 mile in some areas. As the fog lifts, residents will experience very warm and muggy conditions throughout the day, with a Heat Advisory already in effect for Pine and Burnett counties.

    Heat Advisory Extended for Monday

The Heat Advisory will continue through Monday, expanding to include most northwest Wisconsin counties and Pine County in east-central Minnesota. Temperatures combined with high humidity are expected to push heat indices up to 101 degrees in affected areas, including popular recreational spots like Madeline Island and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The National Weather Service urges residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and monitor for signs of heat-related illnesses.

Severe Storms Possible Monday and Tuesday

As the heat intensifies, so does the potential for scattered thunderstorms, which could hit the region as early as this evening and persist into Monday night and Tuesday. The storms are expected to be particularly severe on Monday afternoon and evening, affecting areas from the Brainerd Lakes to Twin Ports and all of east-central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. There is also a risk of heavy rainfall, which could further exacerbate conditions.

    Spotter Information

The National Weather Service encourages SKYWARN spotters to report any instances of hail or heavy rainfall during the storm events. Spotter reports are vital in monitoring the severity of these weather events.
