Extreme Heat Advisory Continues Across Kansas

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent Heat Advisory that will remain in effect until 8 PM CDT on Monday, August 26, 2024. The advisory encompasses central, east central, north central, and northeast Kansas, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels.

Across the affected areas, including Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, and Emporia, the heat index is expected to reach a blistering 105 to 110 degrees over the next two days, creating life-threatening conditions for residents exposed to prolonged outdoor activities.

    Impact and Safety Concerns

Health risks, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke, are of major concern as the dangerous combination of extreme heat and high humidity sweeps through the region. The NWS is urging residents to take precautions, especially during peak hours of sunlight in the afternoon.

According to NWS meteorologist Flanagan, "Residents need to be vigilant. Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing and limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. The risk of heat stroke is real and can occur swiftly in these conditions."

Precautionary Actions: Stay Cool, Stay Safe

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is also advising outdoor workers to schedule frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Those who show signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be immediately moved to a cool place and provided with hydration. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, and anyone displaying symptoms should seek immediate medical attention by calling 911.

Additionally, the NWS has reiterated the dangers of leaving children and pets in vehicles, warning that car interiors can reach fatal temperatures within minutes.

    Affected Areas

The Heat Advisory affects a wide swath of Kansas, including, but not limited to:

    • Topeka
    • Emporia
    • Lawrence
    • Manhattan
    • Ottawa
    • Concordia

Communities across these regions should prepare for dangerous heat conditions through Monday evening. Emergency management teams are on standby, and residents are encouraged to stay informed of the latest updates.
