    Dangerous Heat and Severe Weather Threat Expected Across Minnesota and Wisconsin

    Excessive Heat and Severe Storms Threaten Upper Midwest

    The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued both Excessive Heat Warnings and alerts for severe thunderstorms across central and southern Minnesota and west-central Wisconsin, including areas such as Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Chippewa, and Eau Claire counties. These warnings will remain in effect from 1 PM to 8 PM CDT on Monday, August 26, 2024.

    Dangerous Heat Index Values Up to 110 Degrees

    Temperatures combined with high humidity will push heat indices to dangerous levels, ranging from 100 to 110 degrees in many locations, especially in the Twin Cities and surrounding counties. The Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for Chippewa and Eau Claire, where heat index values could reach a dangerous 107 degrees.

    Severe Thunderstorm Threat: Large Hail, Damaging Winds, and Tornadoes Possible

    In addition to the oppressive heat, the region faces an Enhanced Risk of severe thunderstorms tonight. The NWS warns that multiple rounds of storms could bring large hail, damaging winds, and even a few tornadoes. The storms are expected to begin later this evening and could persist overnight.

    Residents are urged to remain vigilant and stay informed, as the weather may escalate quickly.

    Safety Precautions for Heat and Severe Storms

    For those in the affected regions, taking heat safety precautions is crucial. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, avoid outdoor activities, and remain in air-conditioned environments. Checking on vulnerable neighbors and family members is encouraged during the heatwave.
