    Thunderstorms and Fog Expected; Isolated Severe Storms Possible Later in the Week

    SIOUX FALLS, SDIssued by the National Weather Service at 4:04 AM CDT on August 27, 2024.

    Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Effect Until 6 AM CDT

    The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota, effective until 6 AM CDT on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Counties under the watch include Cherokee, Plymouth, Lyon, and Sioux in Iowa, as well as Cottonwood, Nobles, Rock, and Murray in Minnesota. Areas affected by these storms may experience damaging winds and hail. Residents should remain vigilant and monitor local weather conditions.

    Cities affected by this watch include Le Mars, Rock Rapids, Sioux Center, Spirit Lake, and Marshall.

    Hazardous Weather Outlook for Sioux Falls and Surrounding Areas

    Following today's storms, the region may experience areas of fog continuing into Wednesday morning, with visibility potentially dropping to less than 1 mile in some locations. Those driving overnight and early in the morning should exercise caution.

    Storm Threat Extends into Wednesday and Thursday

    The potential for scattered thunderstorms will persist through the week, with additional storms expected to impact central and northern South Dakota on Wednesday evening. Although the risk of severe weather is low, isolated strong storms may reach areas as far south as Chamberlain and Huron.

    By Thursday afternoon, more thunderstorms are expected to move eastward, with a small chance for isolated severe storms capable of producing strong winds and hail.

    At this time, spotter activation is not anticipated, but residents should stay informed of potential weather changes and be prepared for storms throughout the week.
