A New Costco is Coming to San Jose

The San Jose Planning Commission has recommended that the City Council approve a new Costco location at the Westgate West shopping center, despite significant opposition from residents, parents, and students. Siliconvalley.com reports that the recommendation comes three years after Costco first announced plans to expand in the area.

According to Siliconvalley.com, the proposed project involves investing approximately $60 million to demolish three existing buildings at the mall and construct a 165,148-square-foot Costco store, featuring a 40-foot-tall structure and rooftop parking. The new store is expected to create 250 to 300 jobs, with an average hourly wage of $29.

Siliconvalley.com states that city officials view the development as a major economic boost, anticipating it will generate $2 million annually in sales tax revenue, in addition to utility and property taxes. These revenues are projected to benefit the city of San Jose, Santa Clara County, and Prospect High School.

If approved by the City Council, this would be Costco's sixth location in San Jose, adding to its current four warehouse stores and one business center. The project is estimated to take 21 months to complete.
