IOWA CITY — Four University of Iowa football players have garnered Athlon preseason All-America honors for the 2024 season, it was announced Tuesday by the publication. Fifth-year linebacker Jay Higgins was named to the first team, sixth-year linebacker Nick Jackson was a second team selection, center Logan Jones was a third-team honoree and defensive back Sebastian Castro was a fourth-team selection.
GreatAmerica Financial Services Awards Local Nonprofits $250k through Employee Advised Fund
GreatAmerica Financial Services Corporation announced that its Employee Advised Fund completed its annual spring pledge to the community by awarding $250k to nonprofits in the Eastern Iowa area. It is the first of two giving cycles in 2024. Additionally, GreatAmerica awarded $602,500 from their Donor Advised Fund in the spring 2024 giving cycle for a total of $852,500 benefitting Cedar Rapids and surrounding communities.
Jazz Festival road closures and transit changes announced
The City of Iowa City will be closing multiple streets and changing transit routes beginning Friday, July 5, through Sunday, July 7, 2024, for the Iowa City Jazz Festival. The annual jazz festival organized by the Summer of the Arts brings over a dozen of the world's best jazz musicians to Downtown Iowa City for a three-day music festival. The City's firework show will take place after 9:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, on the Pentacrest, following the last performance of the day.

Jan Jensen announces pair of assistant coach hires
Iowa head women’s basketball coach Jan Jensen announced a pair of additions to her Hawkeye staff on Wednesday. Randi Henderson and Sean Sullivan have both been hired as new staff members for Iowa women’s basketball. Henderson will serve as an assistant coach while Sullivan will serve as an assistant coach and general manager. Both are UI graduates. Henderson spent the last seven seasons at WashU in St. Louis as the head women’s basketball coach. Henderson’s teams went 103-54 (.656) with four NCAA Tournament appearances. Trekfest 39 Begins In Riverside Today
Droves of Iowans, Vulcans, Klingons, and more, are flocking to Riverside this week for Trekfest 39. The annual celebration runs from Thursday, June 27 to Saturday, June 29. Today’s festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. as the Shipyard Beer Tent and Kids Zone open in Hall Park. Both will be available all three days of Trekfest. Music really gets the party going at 6, as Trekfest Chairman, Travis Riggan explains. “We have Matthew Kane and the Greenbrier Band. They’re gonna provide four hours of music on Thursday Night. The beer tent’s gonna be opened up as well as a Kalona beer tasting. We have a few different Kalona beers being presented there. You can listen to some music, have some drinks. Tickets for that are on the Facebook event page.”
